Zabuza Momochi
The Demon of the Hidden Mist and one of the Seven Ninja Swordsmen, a ruthless mercenary whose surprising bond with Haku moves Team 7 and readers alike. His arc demonstrates that even those seemingly irredeemable possess capacity for love and sacrifice.
Biography & Character Analysis
A native of the Hidden Mist Village, Zabuza rose to prominence as one of the village's most dangerous shinobi, earning the title "Demon of the Mist" through his ruthlessness and his mastery of water jutsu. He became one of the Seven Ninja Swordsmen, wielding the massive Kubikiribocho sword, and developed a reputation as an elite assassin willing to accept any contract. During his attempt to take control of the Hidden Mist Village, Zabuza was defeated and exiled. Years later, he accepted a contract from the crime lord Gato to eliminate a bridge builder named Tazuna, work that brought him into conflict with Kakashi and Team Seven. His apparent ruthlessness belied a surprising capacity for genuine emotion, particularly his love for Haku, a young orphan he had taken under his wing. His eventual sacrifice to protect Haku and his death protecting Naruto and his allies demonstrated that even those who have chosen darkness can find redemption through love and sacrifice.
The Demon of the Hidden Mist
Zabuza Momochi is the first true threat the young Team 7 ever faces, a rogue ninja of the Hidden Mist whose reputation was built on a massacre. As one of the legendary Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist, he is a killer of frightening skill and colder ambition.
The executioner’s blade
Zabuza wields Kubikiribocho, an enormous executioner’s sword that regenerates from the iron in the blood it spills. Paired with his mastery of the Hidden Mist and Silent Killing techniques, he can strip away his opponents’ senses and end them before they know he has moved.
Mercenary in the Land of Waves
Hired by the corrupt businessman Gato, Zabuza hunts the bridge-builder Tazuna, whom the Leaf team is sworn to protect. His two duels with Kakashi Hatake introduce the series’ stakes, and his loyal accomplice, the gentle-seeming Haku, becomes just as memorable as the demon himself.
A heart at the end
Zabuza’s cold facade cracks only in death. When Gato betrays and kills Haku, Zabuza carves through Gato’s men with tears in his eyes to avenge the boy he pretended was only a tool — dying beside him, and giving Naruto his first hard lesson in what it costs to be a shinobi.
