Saint Seiya: Legend of Crimson Youth
Synopsis
The third Saint Seiya theatrical film, released in July 1988, is widely regarded among the franchise's long-term audience as the most dramatically ambitious and satisfying entry of the original theatrical run. Its antagonist is Abel, identified as Apollo's brother, who claims authority over Earth on the grounds that Athena has failed in her protective duties — a theological premise that gives the film a density of argumentation the earlier entries had not attempted. Abel's powers, presented as exceeding even the Gold Saints' capability, require Seiya to access a level of Cosmo beyond anything the television series had established at that point, anticipating the escalatory logic that the Hades arc would later formalize. The decision to question the basis of Athena's divine authority rather than simply threaten her physical existence creates dramatic stakes that resonate differently from the ghost warriors and false rulers of the previous entries. At 80 minutes, Legend of Crimson Youth is the longest of the original five films — a test of whether the franchise could sustain a full theatrical experience rather than a double-feature supplement — and its box-office performance and sustained reputation among the series' core audience confirmed that the ambition was justified.
