Movie 2 of 5 Saint Seiya

Saint Seiya: The Heated Battle of the Gods

Year 1988
Studio Toei Animation
Runtime 45 min

Synopsis

The second Saint Seiya theatrical film, released in March 1988, drew on the Asgard arc that Toei Animation had developed for the anime — a storyline not originating in Masami Kurumada's manga — to create a self-contained conflict set in the frozen north. The villain Dolbar, a false ruler of Asgard, deploys god warriors whose distinctive Asgardian armor and battle styles create visual variety from the Gold and Bronze Saint aesthetic that dominates the television series. The film's setting in snow and ice gave Toei's animators the opportunity to build action sequences with a distinctive atmospheric quality — cold environments and northern light contrasting sharply with the sun-and-marble iconography of the Sanctuary arc developing simultaneously in the television broadcast. Directed by Kazuhito Kikuchi at 45 minutes in the double-feature format, The Heated Battle of the Gods functions primarily as an expanded entry into the aesthetic register that the Asgard arc episodes were exploring at the same time. The film was released alongside Dragon Ball Z: The Dead Zone and performed well at the spring theatrical slot, contributing to a productive year for Toei's anime franchises.
