Galactic Tournament Arc (Galaxian Wars)

The Bronze Saints return from their Sanctuary training and compete in a tournament organized by Mitsumasa Kido's granddaughter Saori, with the legendary Sagittarius Gold Cloth as the prize.

The Galactic Tournament Arc establishes the entire premise of [Saint Seiya](/manga-series/saint-seiya): a private foundation has sent one hundred orphan boys around the world to train as Saints — warriors who channel the inner energy known as Cosmo through sacred armors called Cloths, each one inspired by a constellation. Only ten survive their training and return to Japan to compete in the Galaxian Wars, a public tournament whose ostensible purpose is entertainment but whose true stakes will only become clear later. Kurumada uses these opening chapters to introduce the five Bronze Saints who form the series' emotional core. Pegasus Seiya arrives from Greece with the Pegasus Cloth and a stubborn refusal to fight purely for spectacle. Dragon Shiryu, trained at the Five Old Peaks of Rozan, embodies discipline and a bushido-inflected sense of duty. Cygnus Hyoga returns from Siberia carrying both the cold of his ice training and unresolved grief over his mother. Andromeda Shun, gentlest of the five, conceals a devastating defensive technique behind a pacifist temperament. Phoenix Ikki, his older brother, has been forged into something darker by his training in Death Queen Island and arrives mid-arc as the antagonist who steals the Sagittarius Gold Cloth. By the time Ikki escapes with the Cloth's shattered fragments, the arc has accomplished a deceptively complex setup. Readers understand the Cloth-and-Cosmo system, the ranking of Bronze, Silver and Gold Saints, the existence of the Sanctuary, and the cryptic prophecy that Athena has been reborn into the modern world. Saori Kido is positioned as the figure around whom everything will eventually revolve. The Galaxian Wars function less as the story's climax than as its training-wheels chapter: a contained tournament that teaches the audience the rules before the universe expands beyond Japan.
