Saint Seiya: Warriors of the Final Holy Battle
Synopsis
The fourth Saint Seiya theatrical film, released in March 1989, brought the most overtly Western theological antagonist of the original theatrical run to the franchise: Lucifer, the fallen angel whose attempt to claim Earth's sovereignty drives the conflict. Drawing on Christian iconography in ways consistent with the series' broader practice of mythological eclecticism — alongside its Greek foundations, the franchise had always incorporated Roman, Norse, and Christian visual references — the film deploys Lucifer's host of fallen angels as opponents who demand a different spiritual reckoning from the Bronze Saints than the Greek gods and corrupted warriors they normally face. The clash between Athena's cosmological authority and Lucifer's counter-claim is handled with the franchise's characteristic blend of mythological ambition and shonen battle mechanics. The film's 45-minute runtime in the double-feature format with Dragon Ball Z: The Tree of Might gave Toei Animation limited room for the character development that Legend of Crimson Youth had used its longer runtime to attempt, but Warriors of the Final Holy Battle concluded the franchise's original five-film cycle with appropriate mythological scale.
