Renji Abarai
The tattooed lieutenant of Squad 6 who grew up in the Rukongai alongside Rukia. Initially antagonistic toward Ichigo, he becomes one of his strongest allies. His Bankai Hihio Zabimaru and then the restored true Bankai Soo Zabimaru make him one of the most powerful lieutenants.

Renji grew up in the 78th district of Rukongai with Rukia and other orphans. When Rukia was adopted by Byakuya, Renji
was left behind, driving him to work relentlessly to surpass Byakuya and reach Rukia again. He first confronts Ichigo in
Soul Society under orders from Byakuya, but later defies his captain to fight for Rukia's life — and loses.
The lieutenant who chased the sky
Renji Abarai is the lieutenant of the Sixth Division, serving under the very captain he most wants to surpass — the aloof noble Byakuya Kuchiki. Loud, hot-blooded and driven, he is in many ways Ichigo’s mirror among the Soul Reapers.
Zabimaru
Renji wields Zabimaru, a segmented sword that extends into a whip of jointed blades, and his Bankai, Hihio Zabimaru, takes the form of a colossal skeletal serpent. His fighting style is aggressive and relentless, built to close distance and overwhelm.
Rukia’s shadow
Renji grew up in the poverty of Rukongai alongside Rukia Kuchiki, and losing her to the Kuchiki nobility left a wound that shapes his ambition. Much of his drive is the desire to become strong enough to stand beside her again, rather than watch her be taken away.
From rival to comrade
Renji begins the series enforcing Soul Society’s cruelties, then breaks ranks to save Rukia, choosing friendship over orders. His arc is the steady climb from resentful subordinate to a warrior who fights on his own terms alongside Ichigo.
