Yugo Hachiken is the heart of Silver Spoon: an academically gifted but emotionally exhausted student from Sapporo who enrolls at Ooezo Agricultural High School as a boarding student specifically to escape his domineering father and the brutal cram-school environment that left him burned out and directionless. Unlike his classmates, who chose the school out of genuine passion for farming, Hachiken arrives with no dream, no farming background, and a secret belief that he can coast to the top of a "lesser" school. That arrogance is dismantled almost immediately. He cannot catch a runaway calf, is horrified by the realities of food production, and quickly discovers that the farm kids possess a competence and sense of purpose he completely lacks. What defines Hachiken is his deep-seated need to be useful, a compulsion rooted in a childhood where his father equated worth with achievement. This drives both his greatest strength, a tireless willingness to help, and his greatest flaw, an inability to set limits or rely on others, which famously causes him to collapse from exhaustion during the school festival.

Aki Mikage is a first-year classmate of Hachiken and the daughter of a dairy and horse-breeding family, whose presence in the equestrian club is the original reason Hachiken joins it. Warm, kind, and instantly likeable, Aki possesses broad practical knowledge of farm life, livestock care, milk and cheese processing, truck driving, and animal handling, but struggles badly with academics, especially history, and is often oblivious to the emotional undercurrents around her, including Hachiken's developing feelings. Her true gift is horses: she shows exceptional aptitude for riding and any horse-related subject, and her love for the animals is the defining passion of her life. This passion eventually puts her in direct conflict with her family, who expect her to take over the farm rather than chase an equestrian career.

Ichiro Komaba is one of Hachiken's close friends at Ooezo, a gifted baseball player and the childhood friend and neighbor of Aki Mikage, a closeness that initially sparks jealousy in Hachiken. Komaba's family owns a small, financially struggling dairy farm that he helps run alongside his mother and younger twin sisters. His baseball ambition is not about personal glory; it is a deliberate strategy to earn money in the professional leagues and use it to rescue and improve his family's farm. This fusion of athletic dream and family duty makes him one of the most quietly heroic figures in the cast, and his fierce work ethic and reticent intensity stand in sharp contrast to Hachiken's anxious eagerness.

Shinnosuke Aikawa is a warm-hearted classmate and close friend of Hachiken who dreams of becoming a veterinarian after graduation. His ambition is undercut by a comically inconvenient weakness: he faints at the sight of blood, a serious obstacle for anyone hoping to practice veterinary medicine on a working farm. A member of the Holstein Club, Aikawa is deeply devoted to animals and approaches them with genuine tenderness, which makes his squeamishness all the more poignant. His struggle to overcome his fainting in pursuit of his dream provides both running comedy and a sincere subplot about confronting one's own limitations.

Tamako Inada is a classmate of Hachiken and the daughter of a wealthy, large-scale industrial agricultural family, which sets her apart from the small-farm backgrounds of most of the cast. Plump, cheerful, and disarmingly business-minded, Tamako approaches agriculture as an enterprise: she thinks in terms of profit margins, market strategy, and economies of scale where others think in terms of tradition or passion. She went to elementary school with Aki, and her blunt, entrepreneurial worldview frequently challenges the more romantic or duty-bound assumptions of her classmates, providing both comic relief and a hard-nosed counterpoint.

Keiji Tokiwa is one of Hachiken's dormmates and classmates, an easygoing, slightly dim-witted boy from a chicken-farming family who befriends Hachiken early on. Good-natured and unpretentious, Tokiwa struggles academically even more than most of his peers and frequently leans on Hachiken for help with schoolwork, which becomes one of the first ways Hachiken finds a useful role among the farm kids. His cheerful incompetence in the classroom is balanced by his comfortable ease with farm life, and he represents the ordinary, unambitious heart of the student body, kids who will simply go home to inherit modest family operations.
