Enrollment and Pork Bowl

Yugo Hachiken arrives at Ooezo Agricultural High School expecting an easy ride and instead collides with the relentless physical reality of farm life: pre-dawn chores, escaped livestock, and the uncomfortable truth of where food comes from. He befriends his dorm classmates, joins the equestrian club to be near Aki Mikage, and bonds with a runt piglet he names Pork Bowl, setting up the series' central tension between affection for animals and the inevitability of slaughter.

The opening arc establishes Silver Spoon's entire emotional architecture. Yugo Hachiken, an academically driven middle-schooler from Sapporo, deliberately chooses Ooezo Agricultural High School as a boarding student to escape his domineering father and the suffocating cram-school culture of the city. He assumes a rural agricultural school will be intellectually unchallenging, an easy place to top the rankings. He is immediately humbled. The farm kids around him possess practical knowledge, physical stamina, and a calm sense of purpose he completely lacks. Hachiken can solve calculus but cannot catch a runaway calf, mucks up basic chores, and is horrified to learn that eggs emerge from the same opening as chicken waste. The arc's defining thread is Pork Bowl. Hachiken takes responsibility for a weak piglet in the pork production course, names it, feeds it, and grows genuinely attached, even though he knows from the start that the animal is destined for slaughter. This contradiction, caring for a creature you will eat, becomes the moral and emotional core of the series. Hachiken's struggle to reconcile sentiment with the food chain forces him, for the first time, to think seriously about consumption, labor, and the value of life. Alongside this, he meets the supporting cast who will anchor the rest of the story: Aki Mikage, whose horses draw him into the equestrian club; Ichiro Komaba, a dairy farmer's son with professional baseball dreams; and Shinnosuke Aikawa, an aspiring veterinarian who faints at blood. The arc closes with Hachiken using his city resourcefulness to turn the experience into something meaningful, planting the seed of self-worth that the rest of the manga cultivates.
