Detective Boys & Tеiitan Elementary Cases

Conan is enrolled at Teitan Elementary, where he meets the four classmates who form the Detective Boys, and the series settles into its signature mixture of self-contained criminal cases and slowly developing relationships among the recurring cast.

The Detective Boys arc is the structural foundation that allows the series to sustain three decades of weekly serialization. Forced to attend first grade at Teitan Elementary as part of his Conan disguise, Shinichi meets Mitsuhiko Tsuburaya, Genta Kojima, and Ayumi Yoshida — three classmates whose unguarded enthusiasm gradually pulls him into a junior detective squad called the Detective Boys (Shōnen Tantei-dan). The arc later adds a fourth member, Ai Haibara, in circumstances connected to the Black Organization that the early Detective Boys arcs only foreshadow. The arc's structural function is to establish the rhythm of the series. Most chapters present a self-contained criminal case — a murder at a closed venue, a kidnapping with clues, a code to decipher — that Conan solves through a combination of careful observation, applied chemistry, and the occasional well-placed soccer-ball kick. Aoyama uses this case-of-the-week structure to develop the recurring cast incrementally, with the Detective Boys, Inspector Megure, Officer Sato, and Officer Takagi all introduced and developed across the early volumes. The arc also begins the long-running tension between Conan's case-solving and his romantic situation. Ran Mouri's growing suspicion that Conan and Shinichi are the same person becomes a recurring narrative motor, and Aoyama's decision to develop their relationship as a slow burn across hundreds of chapters has been one of the series' most distinctive long-running threads. The arc establishes that the Conan persona is not a temporary inconvenience but a sustained identity around which an entire emotional life develops.
