Ai Haibara & the Black Organization Thread

Shiho Miyano — the chemist who developed APTX 4869 — escapes from the Black Organization, takes the same drug to evade capture, and arrives at the Kudo household as Ai Haibara, becoming the first ally who knows Conan's true identity and the catalyst for the long-running Organization plot.

The arrival of Ai Haibara is the pivot on which the entire long-running plot of [Detective Conan](/manga-series/detective-conan) turns. Shiho Miyano, the chemist who developed APTX 4869 — the same drug administered to Shinichi — escapes from the Black Organization after the Organization murders her sister Akemi in the Million Dollar arc. To evade pursuit, she takes the drug herself, shrinks into the body of a child, and seeks refuge with Professor Agasa under the new identity of Ai Haibara. Aoyama uses Haibara to crack open the entire Organization plot. As the developer of APTX 4869, she is the only character in the series who can plausibly research a counter-agent, and her gradual progress on the antidote — periodic doses produce temporary returns to Shinichi's adult body that drive several mid-series arcs — gives the Organization plot a clear narrative motor that the early arcs lacked. Her presence in the Detective Boys gives Conan a peer who knows his true identity and an interlocutor who can discuss the Organization plot without disrupting the case-of-the-week structure. The arcs of this period also introduce the broader Organization roster. Vermouth, the master-of-disguise actress whose past relationship with Shinichi's mother Yukiko complicates the Organization plot in ways that take dozens of volumes to resolve, makes her first appearance. Gin, Vodka, Chianti, Korn, Bourbon and the rest of the named Organization agents are introduced incrementally across these arcs, and the long-running mystery of the Organization's leader Anokata — the figure whose identity Aoyama only confirmed in the post-volume-90 arcs — is established as the series' ultimate puzzle.
