Gyutaro

Villain Deceased First: Chapter 87

The true form of Upper Moon Six, hidden inside his sister Daki's body. Gyutaro is the one who actually holds the Upper Moon rank — a formidable demon who wields blood sickles and a poison that can kill Hashira. Scarred and lean, he is the complete visual opposite of Daki, and the one who has spent over a century protecting the sister he refused to let die.

Biography & Character Analysis

As a human, Gyutaro was a debt collector in the Entertainment District — ugly, poor, and viciously effective at violence. When his sister Ume (later Daki) was burned alive by a jealous patron's wife, he killed the responsible parties and was imprisoned. Left dying alongside Ume in the street, they were found by the demon who held Upper Moon 6 at the time. Gyutaro accepted transformation for both of them.

Overview

Gyutaro is not the demon you see. He hides inside Daki’s body — concealed, dormant, emerging when she needs him. This is not a trick or a tactical choice. It is an extension of the single organizing fact of his existence: he does not leave his sister.

His Upper Moon rank is real. His blood sickles carry lethal poison that can kill Hashira. He fights Tengen Uzui — the Sound Hashira with Marechi blood and decades of shinobi experience — and by the end of the Entertainment District arc has poisoned him badly enough that Tengen nearly dies after the battle is won. He is the reason Upper Moon Six has held a position for over a century.

But he operates entirely in service of Daki’s survival. He emerged from nothing, built everything from nothing, and the only thing he has ever done with that is keep his sister alive.

Human Life

Gyutaro grew up in the Entertainment District’s poorest tier — the street level where no one has anything and no one cares. He was ugly in an industry where appearance was everything. He survived by being useful in the most direct way: debt collection and enforcement. He was exceptionally good at it. He was exceptionally good at violence.

When his sister Ume was burned alive by a jealous patron’s wife, he killed her and the official who jailed him for it. Then he returned to Ume, who was still dying, and waited. He was going to die there.

A demon found them. Not out of compassion — Upper Moon 6 at the time was looking for useful candidates. Gyutaro’s talent for violence was the relevant factor. He accepted on behalf of both of them without asking Ume.

They have been Upper Moon Six together ever since.

Combat Abilities

Gyutaro’s signature technique is his blood sickles — crescent-shaped projectiles generated from his own blood. They have exceptional range and cutting capability, and critically, his blood is poison. Any wound from the sickles introduces his toxin. The poison’s lethality is high enough that it threatens Hashira-level Demon Slayers: Tengen Uzui is still dying from it after decapitation, requiring Nezuko’s intervention to neutralize.

He also generates large flesh sickles directly from his body for close-range combat — wide-coverage sweeping attacks with the same poison delivery. Against Tengen, who is the fastest of the Hashira in pure movement speed, Gyutaro fights the entire duration of the battle without being cleanly beaten.

The Upper Moon Six constraint: he and Daki must be killed simultaneously. Any wound to one that does not kill them allows the survivor to regenerate. This forces the Demon Slayers to split their already-depleted force and coordinate decapitation at precisely the same moment.

The Entertainment District Fight

When Gyutaro fully emerges, the dynamic of the fight changes completely. Tengen is the one capable of fighting him at all — the others are fighting Daki or recovering. Gyutaro and Tengen’s battle across the Entertainment District’s rooftops is one of the most evenly matched in the series, with Tengen’s Marechi blood (which intoxicates demons) as the only significant equalizer.

Gyutaro poisons him. Tengen continues fighting.

The simultaneous decapitation that ends the arc requires Tanjiro, on the Gyutaro side, to intervene when Tengen loses his arm. Tanjiro decapitates Gyutaro using Sun Breathing while Tengen decapitates Daki, at the same moment.

Death

After decapitation, Gyutaro’s head remains active — he keeps fighting, or tries to. Even severed, his blood sickles threaten everyone around him. It takes everything the surviving Demon Slayers have to survive the aftermath of a fight that is technically already over.

His final moments with Daki are the scene that defines what he was. She reverts to a child, blaming him — blaming him for everything, for choosing this, for failing. He does not defend himself. He holds her. He tells her she was beautiful. He tells her she was a good girl.

None of this is redemption. Gyutaro ate hundreds of people. He poisoned Tengen Uzui badly enough that it was a medical crisis. He enabled Daki to do the same for over a century. The scene does not ask the viewer to forget this. It simply shows the specific thing that was underneath all of it: a boy who found his dying sister and refused to leave.
