Kunigami Rensuke
A powerful striker who enters Blue Lock with a principled belief in teamwork and playing for others. Kunigami's weapon is physical: exceptional strength, powerful headers, and a shot with serious force behind it. His arc is the most dramatically different from the other Blue Lock players — he is eliminated, and when he returns it's as a Neo Blue Lock test subject who has had his abilities artificially enhanced.
Biography & Character Analysis
Kunigami comes from a background of believing soccer is about contributing to the team and winning together. This puts him fundamentally at odds with Blue Lock's philosophy from the first day. He is physically gifted — strong, coordinated, powerful shot — but he wants to score for the team rather than score for himself, and the program treats this as the exact wrong attitude. His elimination and transformation represent the series' darkest exploration of what Blue Lock's philosophy costs.
Overview
Kunigami Rensuke is the player Blue Lock is supposed to eliminate. Not because he lacks talent — he has a powerful shot, exceptional physical build, and real aerial threat. He is eliminated because his motivation is wrong for the program’s purposes. He wants to be a hero for others. He wants to score to make his team happy. He wants soccer to be a collective achievement.
This is exactly what Ego’s program is designed to destroy.
A Player Who Believes in Teams
Kunigami arrives with a genuine and coherent philosophy: football is played by teams, victory is shared, the goal of a striker is to serve the collective by scoring. He is not naive about competition — he trains seriously, competes hard, and pushes himself. He just believes the purpose of individual excellence is collective success.
Blue Lock’s structure punishes this directly. The program rewards players who think about their own weapon, their own advancement, their own scoring record. Players who subordinate themselves to team dynamics — who make the pass instead of taking the shot, who set up others instead of finishing — are lower-ranked because they are producing fewer individual goals. Kunigami’s instinct is always toward the cooperative play, and cooperative play gets ranked below selfish finishing.
He gets eliminated.
Neo Blue Lock
After elimination, Kunigami becomes part of the Neo Blue Lock program — a separate track where eliminated players are offered artificial ability enhancement through technology. This is the darkest part of his arc: having been filtered out for having the wrong mindset, he is now offered a shortcut that bypasses the development the other players went through.
He accepts. He comes back with enhanced physical capabilities and a changed demeanor — colder, more focused on individual outcomes, less recognizable as the principled team player who entered Blue Lock. Whether this represents genuine change or successful erasure of what made him himself is the question his later appearances raise.
What He Represents
Among the Blue Lock players, Kunigami is the clearest counterargument to the program’s philosophy. He was good. He had a real weapon. He competed seriously. He lost not because he was worse but because he valued the wrong thing by Blue Lock’s accounting.
The series doesn’t resolve this with a clean vindication of either position. Kunigami doesn’t return to prove the program wrong, and the program doesn’t vindicate itself by making him better than he was through ego alone. His arc stays complicated: someone who had genuine values, entered a system that required different values, was reshaped by that system, and has to figure out what’s left.
