Shoya Ishida is the protagonist of A Silent Voice. As a restless, attention-seeking elementary school boy, he led the relentless bullying of his deaf classmate Shoko Nishimiya, treating her difference as a source of amusement and repeatedly destroying her hearing aids. When the consequences caught up with him, his classmates scapegoated him entirely, and he spent the following years as a profoundly isolated outcast, unable to look others in the eye. By high school he has become withdrawn and suicidal, perceiving crosses over the faces of everyone he cannot connect with. His decision to find Shoko and apologize, having secretly learned sign language out of remorse, sets the entire story in motion and frames him as a flawed perpetrator seeking genuine atonement.

Shoko Nishimiya is the deaf girl at the heart of A Silent Voice. She transfers into Shoya's elementary class and patiently tries to befriend her classmates through a written notebook, meeting cruelty with persistent kindness even as Shoya bullies her. Gentle, self-effacing and deeply empathetic, she tends to absorb blame for the conflicts around her and believes her presence only causes suffering for others. When Shoya later seeks her out to apologize, she responds with startling warmth rather than resentment. Her struggle with self-worth and her quiet capacity for forgiveness make her the emotional counterweight to Shoya, and her gradual willingness to value herself becomes one of the manga's central threads.

Yuzuru Nishimiya is Shoko's younger sister, fiercely devoted to protecting her. Tomboyish in appearance and often mistaken for a boy, she is wary of strangers and initially treats Shoya as a threat, doing everything she can to keep him away from Shoko after learning he was once her bully. Beneath her guarded, prickly exterior lies a child carrying adult-sized worry: she has appointed herself her sister's guardian and frequently skips school to watch over her. Yuzuru's blunt honesty and protective ferocity make her a vital presence, and her gradual acceptance of Shoya marks an important turning point in his redemption.

Tomohiro Nagatsuka is Shoya's loyal high school friend and his first genuine companion after years of isolation. After Shoya stands up for him in a minor confrontation, Nagatsuka latches onto him with enthusiastic, slightly overbearing devotion, declaring Shoya his best friend. Heavyset, dramatic and prone to comic exaggeration, he provides much of the manga's lighter moments while remaining sincerely supportive. Though sometimes oblivious to the deeper tensions among the group, his unwavering loyalty to Shoya never falters, and he repeatedly proves himself a true friend when it matters most.

Naoka Ueno was one of Shoya's elementary school classmates and a participant in the bullying of Shoko. Years later she reappears as an outspoken, abrasive young woman who is openly infatuated with Shoya and resentful of Shoko, whom she blames for ruining Shoya's life and reputation. Unlike most of the cast, Ueno remains largely unrepentant, voicing the cruel justifications that others keep hidden. Her blunt hostility makes her one of the most divisive figures in the group, embodying the difficult truth that not everyone involved in harm chooses to change or apologize.

Miki Kawai is a former classmate who carefully maintains an image of kindness and innocence while avoiding any accountability for her past. During the elementary school bullying she laughed along and quietly participated, yet she later positioned herself as a bystander and helped turn the class against Shoya to protect her own reputation. Pretty, popular and outwardly gentle, she is skilled at presenting herself as blameless. Her self-serving revisionism makes her a subtle but pointed study in how people excuse their own complicity.

Miyoko Sahara is the tall, gentle classmate who was the only child to genuinely befriend Shoko during the elementary school years, communicating through a notebook and her own halting attempts at sign language. Bullied herself for taking Shoko's side, she eventually stopped attending school, an early casualty of the same social pressure that later scapegoated Shoya. When she reappears in high school she is warm and uncomplicated, one of the few members of the reassembled group who carries no hidden resentment toward Shoko.

Satoshi Mashiba is a principled high school classmate who befriends Shoya's circle and serves as a moral touchstone within the group. Tall, athletic and openly contemptuous of bullying, he holds firm convictions about cruelty and fairness without knowing Shoya's own history as a former bully. His presence introduces quiet tension, since his black-and-white sense of justice sits uneasily beside the messy, guilt-laden pasts of those around him.
