Yusuke Urameshi is the fourteen-year-old delinquent at the heart of Yu Yu Hakusho. Rude, brash, and constantly skipping school, he is written off by teachers and neighbors as a lost cause, yet beneath the surface he possesses an instinctive sense of justice and a fierce loyalty to the few people he cares about. His character is defined by the gap between his abrasive reputation and his genuine selflessness, a contrast established in the very first chapter when he dies saving a stranger's child.

Kazuma Kuwabara begins as Yusuke's loud, brawling rival, a delinquent leading his own small gang and forever trying to prove himself the tougher of the two. Beneath the bravado, however, Kuwabara is the most conventionally decent member of the core cast: soft-hearted, devoted to his friends, and bound by a personal code of honor he refuses to break even when it costs him. His genuine grief at Yusuke's death early in the series quietly signals the loyalty that will define him.

Younger Toguro is the central antagonist of the Dark Tournament Saga and one of shonen manga's most memorable villains. A hulking, disciplined fighter capable of terrifying physical transformation, he serves the tournament's human sponsors while pursuing his own private aim. Far from a cackling monster, Toguro is calm, deliberate, and almost philosophical about combat, which makes him all the more menacing as an opponent for Yusuke.

Kurama is a legendary fox demon, Yoko Kurama, who escaped death in the demon world by taking refuge in the body of an unborn human child, growing up as the gentle, brilliant student Shuichi Minamino. He first appears as an antagonist during the artifact-theft case but soon allies with Yusuke, and his dual nature — serene human son and ruthless ancient demon — makes him one of the most layered figures in the series.

Hiei is a small, fierce fire demon who, like Kurama, debuts as an enemy before joining Yusuke's side. Cold, proud, and contemptuous of weakness, he initially regards humans with open disdain and allies with the team out of pragmatism rather than affection. His piercing intensity and reluctance to show vulnerability mask a complicated past and a buried capacity for loyalty that the series reveals only gradually, making him a fan-favorite for his edge and his slow, grudging thaw.

Genkai is a legendary martial-arts master and psychic, introduced as the aging teacher who trains Yusuke and entrusts him with her ultimate technique. Gruff, sharp-tongued, and impatient with self-pity, she hides deep wisdom and a tragic history beneath a prickly exterior. As Yusuke's mentor she is both a demanding instructor and a moral compass, pushing him toward discipline and responsibility while never coddling his ego.
