Mello & Near Arc

L's successors Near and Mello take over investigation as L's health deteriorates. Near inherits the investigation through official channels while Mello pursues aggressive unorthodox methods working with criminal organizations. The dual investigation approach applies increasing pressure to Light as parallel investigations converge toward identifying the truth.

After L's death, the investigation fragments into two parallel operations: Near (N) continuing L's work through international SPK channels, and Mello joining the criminal mafia to pursue extra-legal investigation. They are competitors, not allies. Near represents institutional legitimacy and systematic evidence accumulation; Mello represents aggressive confrontation and criminal resources. Neither possesses L's comprehensive genius, but together they create a pincer movement Light cannot escape. Near employs systematic methodology: evidence collection, logical deduction, institutional cooperation. Mello employs violence, intimidation, and criminal network leverage. Each independently reaches significant conclusions but neither operates at L's level. Light exploits their mutual distrust, preventing information sharing between them. He understands that if Near and Mello coordinated, their combined capabilities would exceed L's—but they won't cooperate. Competition is their nature. Light manufactures Mikami Teru as his proxy Death Note user—a genuinely devoted follower whom Light motivates through philosophical alignment rather than coercion. Mikami becomes a weapon of perfect loyalty because he believes in Kira's vision of justice. Light distances himself from direct killing, creating plausible deniability through intermediary execution. Kiyomi Takada becomes his media agent, controlling information flow and public perception. Light expands from a solitary killer to orchestrating a network of believers. Mello's aggressive tactics force catastrophic decisions. His kidnapping of Sayu Yagami (Light's sister) creates emotional leverage that Light never anticipated. Light's careful separation of personal and professional life shatters. He exposes Mikami to prevent Sayu's murder—betraying his operational security to save his sister, revealing to Near that Light's perfect logic contains emotional attachments that override strategic calculation. Mello dies before the final confrontation, but his contribution proves decisive posthumously. His investigation into the Yotsuba Group and SPK coordination creates the informational foundation that Near uses to construct the final trap. Mello's death removes the only person besides L who possessed the intelligence and aggression to challenge Light directly. Yet it's Mello's evidence, not Mello's presence, that delivers Light's defeat.
