Seika Ijichi
Nijika's older sister and the manager of STARRY, the Shimokitazawa live venue where Kessoku Band performs. Seika is stern, competent, and protective of her sister in ways that occasionally make STARRY feel more like family oversight than a professional opportunity. She takes her job seriously, takes music seriously, and takes the question of whether Nijika's band is actually good seriously enough to give them honest feedback.
Biography & Character Analysis
Seika runs STARRY with real competence and takes the responsibility of running a live music venue seriously. She gave Kessoku Band their first performance opportunities because her sister is in the band, and she has continued to book them because they keep improving. She maintains a professional distance that occasionally slips into visible investment in the band's success, which she would probably deny if asked.
Overview
Seika Ijichi occupies the adult authority position in Bocchi the Rock! without being an obstacle. She is the person who controls access to STARRY, whose judgment matters to Nijika’s arc, and whose competence sets the standard the band is measuring themselves against. She is also genuinely supportive of Kessoku Band — but her support is conditional on the band being worth supporting, and she maintains enough professional distance to keep that condition real.
The series uses her sparingly, which is correct. Her appearances mark significant moments in the band’s development: early performances where she watches from the back and says very little, later performances where her presence carries enough weight that you can feel Nijika tracking where she’s standing.
Running STARRY
STARRY is a real venue for real bands, and Seika’s management of it reflects this. She books Kessoku Band because her sister is in the band, but she would stop booking them if they were consistently bad. The fact that she keeps booking them is, in the language she uses to interact with Nijika, praise. Seika does not give explicit praise. The continued access to the venue is the praise.
She also manages Kikuri, which requires a particular kind of patience. The series’ running gag of Seika dealing with Kikuri’s latest disaster is the closest she comes to broad comedy — it shows the professional side of managing a live venue, which involves a lot of relationship management with musicians who are unreliable in various specific ways.
The Older Sister Dynamic
The specific tension between Seika and Nijika is the question of how much the band’s access to STARRY is about the venue’s merit assessment and how much is about family. Nijika wants to earn it. Seika would give her the space regardless, but she wouldn’t give anyone a space that doesn’t merit it, and the distinction between those two things is never quite resolved.
This is realistic and the series doesn’t try to clean it up. Most opportunities are partly earned and partly given, and figuring out which part is which is genuinely hard. Nijika’s drive to make sure they’re good enough that Seika would book them even without the connection is the productive form of that question.
