Haryu Udaka

Supporting Character Alive First: Chapter 2

Taiki's closest friend in the badminton club — the person who knows about the Chinatsu situation, has opinions about it, shares them, and maintains the friendship through all of Taiki's evasions. Haryu is the support structure for Taiki's romantic confusion and an earnest competitive partner in the badminton arc.

Biography & Character Analysis

Haryu is Taiki's friend at school and fellow badminton club member. He is aware of Taiki's crush on Chinatsu before the cohabitation and considerably more aware of it after. His friendship with Taiki involves the specific work of being present for someone who does not always find it easy to express what he is actually dealing with, and doing this without making Taiki feel managed.

Overview

Haryu Udaka is the friend who actually knows what is going on. Taiki does not advertise his feelings for Chinatsu. He manages them internally, processes them privately, and would prefer that his external life not visibly reflect his internal state. Haryu is the exception — the person who sees through this without being asked to.

His value to the series is the specific thing that a genuine best friend provides in a romance: honest external perspective from someone who cares about the protagonist’s wellbeing more than they care about protecting his ego or his evasions. He teases Taiki because he cares, not because he is indifferent. He pushes back because he knows Taiki well enough to know what he is actually avoiding.

On the Badminton Side

Haryu’s own athletic arc runs alongside Taiki’s. They share the same sport, train in the same environment, and their competitive relationship as teammates develops over the series. His ambitions in badminton provide a parallel to Taiki’s — they are pursuing the same general goal (competitive improvement, nationals) from slightly different positions.

This makes him a more complete character than a pure romance-support function: he has his own goals, his own development, his own place in the sports story that Blue Box is also telling. The friendship grounds both tracks of the series because Haryu is present in both.

What He Offers Taiki

The specific thing Haryu does for Taiki is remain honestly engaged without requiring Taiki to have figured anything out. He doesn’t push Taiki to confess or act or resolve anything on a particular timeline. He is present, he is honest about what he observes, and he is available when Taiki eventually needs to actually talk about something.

This is the kind of friendship that’s harder to portray than it sounds — uncomplicated genuine support without agenda or pressure — and Blue Box uses it to give Taiki somewhere to land that isn’t the cohabitation pressure-cooker.
