Arrancar Arc

Aizen creates an army of Arrancar in Hueco Mundo. Ichigo must master his Hollow powers to face the Espada.

The Arrancar arc is Bleach's most expansive narrative undertaking, spanning hundreds of chapters across multiple sub-arcs — the Arrancar Introduction, the Hueco Mundo Invasion, and the Fake Karakura Town Battle — and representing Tite Kubo's most ambitious attempt to dramatize a conflict on a truly world-historical scale. Following Sosuke Aizen's defection to Hueco Mundo with the Hogyoku, he begins creating Arrancar — Hollows who have had their masks partially removed to gain Shinigami-like powers — assembling an army of Espada ranked by combat power that represents the greatest existential threat the Soul Society has ever faced. The arc begins with Arrancar appearing in Ichigo's home city of Karakura Town, forcing Ichigo to confront opponents whose Resurreccion forms represent transformations of his own Hollow power. When Aizen targets the real Karakura Town for destruction — its spiritual energy is the key component in creating the King's Key — the Soul Society deploys its captains to defend it while a smaller team including Ichigo, Chad, Orihime, Ishida, and Renji infiltrates Hueco Mundo to rescue Orihime after her capture. The Hueco Mundo sub-arc is Bleach at its most atmospheric — an endless desert under permanent artificial moonlight housing a gothic fortress of bone and shadow. Each Espada represents a different aspect of death, and their battles with the rescuers explore Kubo's most elaborate power-system concepts. The arc's culminating battle at Fake Karakura Town assembles virtually every named character in the series for a chaotic multi-front war whose scope and spectacle Kubo sustains through the sheer variety of its participants and the political reversals that continue to reshape allegiances.
